Catnip has been used for many years as an herbal remedy. Taken orally, Catnip is most commonly used in connection with anxiety, insomnia, and nervousness. It contains a substance, known as nepetalactone, which has a sedative effect in humans similar to valerian.  Due to this effect, catnip may also be used to help lessen migraine headaches. Catnip elevates the mood and gives one a feeling of well being.

Catnip nourishes the stomach and nerves. It calms the nervous system and is used also for digestion. It has also been used to treat inflammation and help to eliminate toxins and flush Gallstones.

Catnip has been used historically to relieve stomach complaints such as colic, cramps, gas, and indigestion because chemicals in it may have muscle-relaxing, or antispasmodic, effects. It is used is used to stop vomiting. The tea is used for colic in infants. For fever the tea is used as an enema. This enema is soothing and relaxing and helps dislodge congestion in the colon.

Topically, catnip has often been used to reduce swelling associated with arthritis, hemorrhoids, and soft tissue injuries.
