Gotu Kola is native to the India , Asian and Malaysia areas. It has been used for thousands of years as a leafy green in Sri Lankan cuisine.  It is considered quite nutritious. In Thailand cups with gotu kola leaves are used as an afternoon stimulant. The juice from the leaves is thought to relieve hypertension. A poultice of the leaves is also used to treat open sores.

The leaves of this plant have been used around the world for centuries as an herbal remedy to treat leprosy, cancer, skin disorders, arthritis, hemorrhoids and tuberculosis. It is popular in the West as a nerve tonic to promote relaxation and to enhance memory. It is commonly used to rebuild energy reserves, improve memory and treat fatigue, both mental and physical.

Gotu kola is mildly anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and is a circulatory stimulant and a diuretic. It is known as “brain food” as it improves the memory and retards the aging process. It is thought to revitalize the nerves and brain cells.

Gotu kola has a mild tranquilizing, anti-anxiety and anti-stress effect, It has a calming effect on the body and is used as a treatment for children with ADD. In general it has a stimulating effect on the brain that increases one's ability to focus while having a soothing and relaxing effect on an overactive nervous system.
