Hyssop has been used for many centuries as an herbal remedy. It is traditionally used for treatment of colds and coughs. The mold that produces penicillin grows on hyssop leaves.

Hyssop expels mucous from all parts of the body. The tea is used as a gargle for sore throat. It may regulate both high and low blood pressure. It also promotes good digestion. The green tops of the herb are sometimes boiled in soup to be given for asthma.

Externally it can be used as a poultice on cuts and bruises and is also used for relief of muscular rheumatism. A tea made with the fresh green tops, and drunk several times daily is one of the traditional remedies for rheumatism.
