Lemon balm has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy. Lemon balm has antibacterial, antihistamine, antiviral and antioxidant  properties.

It was historically used for lifting melancholy and it continues to be used in treating mild depression, stress, nervous indigestion, insomnia, migraines, and is claimed to improve memory and attention span in Alzheimers and dementia patients. It improves mood and mental performance. It is also used for  herpes and shingles to reduce discomfort from the sores. It is believed to extend age. The antihistamine properties make it useful in treating allergies.

Externally the leaves are used as an insect repellant. The oil is used in aromatherapy.

CAUTION: Lemon balm should be avoided by those on thyroid medication as it is believed the herb inhibits the absorption of some medicines.
