Licorice has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy. It contains estroil and estrogen as well as nutritive and laxative properties. It has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. It is sometimes used to detoxify the body and digestive system.

Licorice is used internally for asthma, bronchitis, coughs, peptic ulcer, arthritis and allergies.  The tea is used for laryngitis to restore the voice. It helps expel mucous from respiratory tract. It is further used to prevent liver toxicity and to treat tuberculosis.  It is also good as a mild laxative for babies. It is an herb used for weight control.

It is used externally for eczema, herpes, shingles, sunburn and insect bites.

CAUTION: Taken over a long period of time or in large doses it can cause sodium and water retention which elevates the blood pressure.
